Brucella Canis : Bacterial Infection in Dogs

Brucella canis is a rare bacterial infection in dogs, but it is important to be aware of its risks, especially if you have an imported dog. In the UK, cases of Brucella canis are uncommon, but the number of confirmed infections is increasing. This bacteria is primarily seen in dogs imported from Eastern Europe, particularly Romania.

Lifestyle management: infected dogs should not be used for breeding, and non-reproductive means of transmission must be considered, eg via excretion of infected urine, contact with other dogs, ingestion, inhalation, contact with mucous membranes (such as the eyes), and through broken skin (eg cuts and grazes).

If your dog tests positive for Brucella canis, it is mandatory to inform the Animal and Plant Health Agency. This infection is concerning because it can transfer from dogs to humans, although human infection is rare.

How Can Humans Get Infected?

The highest risk to humans comes from contact with an infected dog that has recently given birth or experienced a miscarriage. Though less common, it is possible for the infection to spread through the dog’s urine or saliva.

Symptoms in Humans

In humans, Brucella canis usually causes mild, non-specific symptoms. These can include:

  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Sweating
  • Headaches
  • Tiredness
  • Back and joint pain

Symptoms generally appear within 3-4 weeks after exposure, but this can vary from one week to up to six months. If you think you may have been exposed to Brucella canis, it’s important to contact your GP for advice.

Protecting Your Dog and Yourself

If you own or plan to adopt an imported dog, especially from high-risk areas like Eastern Europe, consider further research and regular testing to ensure your dog’s health. For more information, visit reputable sources such as the British Veterinary Association or The Kennel Club.

Stay informed, stay safe!
